New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology
About
The New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology - as you might assume from its name - concentrates academically on bachelor of science degrees in engineering, the sciences, technology, management and technical communication. Home to around just 2,000 students, the institute is one of the smaller science and engineering schools in North America.
Well-known areas of research at the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology include hydrology, astrophysics, geophysics, information technology and petroleum recovery. The institute has received federal funding to assist with its research and as a result of this has acquired the nearby unincorporated community of Playas - which the institute uses as a field site.
While the academic focus is highly scientific, there is a wide range of recreational activities for students enrolled at the institute to enjoy. A performing arts series is held every year by the institute, while the local area provides opportunities to try your hand at rock climbing, hiking, and mountain biking - to name just a few! There is also a sizeable outdoor swimming pool on campus, with a depth of up to 11 feet.
